During Phase I of the Fleming Fund (2019-2023), CAPTURA expanded the volume of historical and current data on antimicrobial resistance and use in South and Southeast Asia through the following:
Identification, collection, and analysis of data from 2016-2019 for national and regional context Tailored capacity building, data processing, and AMR network expansion activitiesIdentification of gaps in data and quality improvement measures for strengthening surveillance capacity
Collaboration with in-country stakeholders to identify and assess the quality of AMR/U/C data in CAPTURA countries
CAPTURA Phase 1 Consortium
International Vaccine Institute (IVI) – Originally founded as an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), IVI is an international not-for-profit organization committed to the discovery, development, delivery, and epidemiological surveillance of vaccines. IVI’s Antimicrobial Resistance Department, part of the Epidemiology, Public Health, Impact (EPIC) Unit, led CAPTURA I activities. These included project management and oversight, coordination and support of in-country activities including data collection, analysis, and visualization, and regional capacity building trainings and workshops.

Public Health Surveillance Group (PHSG) – A global consulting group providing services and support across One Health sectors, PHSG has significant experience in supporting local governments in Asia and Africa in conducting surveillance assessments and working with ministries to enhance surveillance and health systems. PHSG supported in-country CAPTURA I activities and provided subject matter expertise in the development of protocols, training modules, and monitoring frameworks for in-country activities.
Big Data Institute, University of Oxford (BDI) – Part of the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information and Discovery, BDI is an interdisciplinary research institute that devises methods for analysing large sets of data related to prevention, treatment, causes, and/or consequences of disease. Professor David Aanensen, the Director of the Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance, and team guided the collection, interpretation, and visualisation of metadata, and development of an AMC data visualization tool utilising methods they developed for mobile data capture (https://five.epicollect.net) and epidemiological data linkage (https://microreact.org) for analyses and visualization of very large datasets.
CAPTURA I Countries
Key Activity Accomplishment
From 2019-2023, key activities were conducted on a country-by-country basis and contextualized to fit within the countries’ expressed interests.
Country Reports
Final country reports disseminating the information collected during CAPTURA I activities were shared with each of the CAPTURA countries. Reports include an overview of project activities, descriptions of the data collection and analysis, and discussion of findings and their relevance for national stakeholders and shaping of AMR policies.
CAPTURA I Regional Workshop
Upon completion of country-level engagements, the CAPTURA I consortium gathered local, regional, and global AMR stakeholders for a virtual Regional Workshop held from June 28 to June 3, 2022. The workshop included topics on data outputs, insights gained from project activities and partnerships, and strategies for national and regional level efforts to combat AMR.
