In February 2023, the CAPTURA project phase 1 concluded its work in Bhutan by delivering the final country report along with individual results for four major hospitals:

• Jigme Dorji Wangchuk National Referral Hospital
• Central Regional Referral Hospital
• Eastern Regional Referral Hospital
• Phuentsholing General Hospital

This effort marked a significant milestone in strengthening Bhutan’s capacity for antimicrobial resistance (AMR), antimicrobial consumption (AMC), and antimicrobial use (AMU) data surveillance. The findings were developed in close collaboration with the Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Royal Government of Bhutan, and were supported by the Fleming Fund Regional Grants (FF10-135 & FF11-139).

Despite the operational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CAPTURA team, in partnership with Bhutanese stakeholders, successfully carried out retrospective data collection, conducted WHONET training for laboratory personnel, and piloted AMU surveillance in key referral hospitals. These activities contributed to the establishment of a preliminary national baseline to support Bhutan’s ongoing AMR surveillance development and inform future policy and investment decisions.

The final report captured key insights from Bhutan’s AMR context, laboratory and surveillance capacities, and progress made under the AMR National Action Plan (2018–2022). It also laid the groundwork for strengthening surveillance infrastructure and advancing evidence-based approaches to AMR containment.

CAPTURA extended sincere appreciation to its in-country team and collaborating institutions for their dedication and support throughout the project’s implementation in Bhutan.
