Nepal Country Report - CAPTURA I
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a significant and growing global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where surveillance systems and regulatory frameworks often face critical resource and capacity constraints. In response to this challenge, the United Kingdom’s Department of Health and Social Care, through the Fleming Fund—a £265 million UK aid investment—has committed to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening AMR surveillance and data systems in LMICs. Managed in partnership with Mott MacDonald as the Grants Management Agent, the Fleming Fund Regional Grants have enabled the implementation of numerous projects to enhance the understanding and control of AMR.
One such initiative is the CAPTURA project (Capturing Data on Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns and Trends in Use in Regions of Asia), which began in 2019 with the objective of expanding access to historical AMR, antimicrobial consumption (AMC), and antimicrobial use (AMU) data across 12 countries in South and Southeast Asia, including Nepal. This final report presents the outcomes of CAPTURA’s engagement in Nepal, summarizing the project’s activities, findings, and contributions toward AMR data consolidation and capacity building.
The report is intended to support evidence-based planning, investment, and policymaking in AMR containment both within Nepal and across the broader Asian region. It addresses a wide range of stakeholders—including government agencies, international partners, academic and research institutions, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector—who are involved in AMR surveillance, infectious disease prevention, and health system strengthening.
Data and insights presented herein have been compiled through direct project activities as well as in collaboration with national stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) of Nepal, with data sharing governed by formal agreements. CAPTURA acknowledges the vital contributions of the MoHP leadership, in-country coordinators, consultant microbiologists, and numerous national stakeholders whose support has made this work possible.
